Put Your Focus on the Action of the Putt
Put Your Focus on the Action of the Putt
There can be a powerful way for you to take on the dreaded 3 or 4 foot putts you face each time you are on the course. If you are like many, you may get wrapped up in 'what you should do' during this putt or 'how will I do it?" The mechanic of the motion of the putt can be a very dis-arming process. Let's find a more powerful way to take on these putts and find greater success when you play!
Focus on what you are creating, rather than how you create it.
The action of the putt (or shot) or what you want the ball to do when you play is more important to you in your golf game than the swing mechanic you may be focusing on.
If you are like most golfers, you have a swing thought, perhaps a check-list of things you do before you hit a shot or stroke a putt.
When putting you may reflect and notice you do not really think about what the ball will do or how it will get there. We are all guilty of placing our focus on perhaps the length of the stroke or the path of the club when we putt.
Golf Sports Psychologists point out to golfers that their subconscious mind will gather and store data of length of putt, slope of the terrain, amount of break, etc as you look over the putt before you attempt it. I am sure you do this also before you attempt a putt.
To find more empowering ways of putting it is very important for you to focus on the Action of the Putt or simply put, what do you wish to the ball to do.
Above in the picture is a golf ball with about a 8 foot putt to a cup. Directly in front of it is a penny. About another 3 feet in front of it is another penny. As you can see this particular putt is a straight putt and the 'Action' that is needed is for the ball to roll over the first penny, then the second and the ball would move along its path to the hole.
If this were a breaking putt, let's say it could curve left to right about 5 inches. In this case the second penny (the one nearer the hole) would be lined up to left of the cup and your 'action needed' would be for you to strike the ball over the first penny, then the second penny and the slope or break of the green would bend the path of the ball back right and into the cup. For the breaking putt, you are putting from penny one, to penny two - which would be on the apex line of the putt. Apex of a putt for the most part is where the ball will start to break toward the hole. All putts we hit are straight in nature, we are just putting it to a spot and then allowing the slope or curve of the green to have the ball curve toward and into the cup.
By focusing on the Action of the Putt you are now focusing on the Reality You Wish to Create! As you know, I mention this many, many times in coaching. The reality you will see as you play is a reflection of the conscious thoughts you have prior to any shot. Golf does not just happen at random, I repeat, golf does not just happen at random.
Your conscious mind is projecting forward what you will see in your next present moment you will then see.
So rather than focus on how far that putter will go back in you stroke, or what pace you will stroke that long putt, try to focus on the Action of The Putt Itself. What do you want the ball to do?
Your mind is a computer and it can gather and store all the data needed for a better putt, distance, slope, pace of the putt. Allow your computer to work for you.
Program the universe or your conscious projections of what you will see to bring you what you want, fewer putts and putts that arrive in the cup from closer distances of 3-5 feet or end up much closer to the cup with 20-40 feet putts.
The Action of the Ball as it rolls should be your primary focus.
Practice this exercise on the putting green putting over pennies or dimes and begin to build your focus on the action of what the ball will do. Then take the pennies or dimes away and try to locate a speck or spot on the green of where that path of the ball should roll towards and over.
You will be focusing on the action of the putt and thus the outcome of what you desire, rather than the stroke mechanic itself. This is a very liberating thing to do.
The current Master Champion Danny Willett putts over a spot directly in front of his ball every time he putts. That is his total focus, just that one spot. So perhaps for you just one spot is enough to focus on the action of what the ball is doing.
Give it a try, takes some trust on your part. But the game of golf is a spiritual mental game that is so much about expanding who you are, what you believe you can do and learning to trust in your higher consciousness. You may not believe that or be aware of it, but I guarantee you, part of your conscious being (higher self or soul) has encouraged you to take on golf to Expand More of Who You Are. So let's expand you a little more, shall we!! Good luck.
